William Arthur Toplis (British, 1857-1942), ‘Saignée Bay – Souffleur – Sark’ watercolour, heightened with white, signed and dated (18)96 lower right, inscribed and signed in the artist’s hand to reverse (copy of inscription pasted verso), original hollow gilt frame 9 3/8 x 13 3/8in. (23.8 x 34cm.) * This work appears to be an early version of the well known 1905 watercolour featured in The Book Of Sark, with a very similar composition and weather conditions. ** Framing recently refreshed using original frame and glass, which led to the inscription to the reverse being discovered. Toning to paper visible to sky at top left. Slight cockling to sheet. Good overall and colours remain strong.
