WIDENHAM & ADAMS;

WIDENHAM & ADAMS; a good mid-19th century rosewood and brass inlaid marine chronometer with outer mahogany case bearing ivory plaque numbered 228 and with leather straps enclosing the rosewood two-sectioned brass inlaid main case, the upper glass bearing a handwritten label 'Cleaned 6/1913.J.Sewill' with Sewill label to the lid, the chronometer itself with silvered dial inscribed 'Widenham & Adams Makers to the Royal Navy, Lombard St. London 1943' and with twin brass carrying handles. CONDITION REPORT Width of outer case 23cm, width of rosewood case 17.25cm, diameter of bezel of dial 12cm, diameter of silvered dial itself 9.25cm. The piece is complete with the winding key, the gimbal all works well and it does tick when wound. There are a few spots to the silvered dial and some pitting and light rusting to the gimbal and metal framework throughout. There is one tiny screw missing to the plate that covers the winding hole underneath the chronometer. The case itself has a split running horizontally from the rear brass corners and a very fine split starting to form halfway along at the front of the lid. Otherwise general surface wear to the case and some pitting to the brass. The circular ivory roundel is missing beneath the escutcheon and we do not have the key for the case itself. The outer mahogany case has a split to the base and the leather strap is somewhat perished. General surface wear throughout, as you would expect. Appears to be the original lid. Provenance: this piece is from a private collection in Surrey and the vendor's father taught at Liverpool Maritime College many years ago.
